On behalf of Hawtree, Westenborg has been designing and supervising the first phase of bunker renovations with the view of returning them to their original Fred Hawtree design style. As is often the case with bunkers, over time they lose their shape through years of maintenance and erosion, and Purdis Heath bunkers are no exception to the rule. The bunkers on the 1st, 3rd, 5th and 18th holes have been renovated, on the whole, in similar locations but a better located 18th fairway bunker was constructed and the 1st fairway bunker eased a little closer to the fairway edge.
The first phase has progressed well, with the final installation of sand due to happen February 2015. Working on a sandy site allowed work to occur in all weather and thanks to the abundant stands of heather on the golf course, and hence the opportunity to take some of the heather and place it on the bunkers, they already have an early sense of maturity to them.
