Construction of five new greens at Gathurst Golf Club complete and will ready for play Spring 2016
Gathurst Golf Club
Construction is complete at Gathurst Golf Club where Westenborg Golf Design was commissioned to design three new USGA specification green complexes and some surface water control re-profiling around the 2nd green. The 13th green was also altered to USGA specification but only the green surface; unlike the other three greens, the surrounds were untouched and the green area remained the same as before.
Gathurst is a parkland golf course near Wigan with some quite unique topography in the form of swales, valley’s and gulley’s, while other areas are mostly flat; making for an interestingly contrasting landscape. For those who regularly use the M6 motorway driving north, the golf course is clearly visible on the left just before junction 27.
The three new greens, the 5th, 8th and 10th were all increased in area but because the other greens on the golf course have little in the way of surface movement, we ensured that the new green surfaces were not overly contoured; subtle is a word we like to use in these cases.
All areas were turfed and will therefore be ready for play May 2016.
